Til Death Do Us Part
Destroy All Girls script was born in London (where they lived while Gil filmed The Batman) during quarantine when Ani and Gil became inspired by the grungy London skating scene - viewing a sport they had known their entire life from an entirely new lens. Not only did they co-write the script but they will also produce and play roles in the film which details a major feminist hymn with a huge 90s underground skate culture backdrop. Ani and Gilwill play first-generation Americans, true to their roots, born in America after a hard family immigration from Venezuela. The film is based in Union City, New Jersey, and is entirely street cast featuring some of the mos tfamous skaters in the world.
Gil and Ani married earlier this year at the Viscaya estate in Miami. The building’s historical nature typically warrants all events to be held outdoors, but a rainy day turned out in their favor moving the celebrations inside highlighting the Mediterranean revival architecture. Ani wore a strapless textured ballgown by Danielle Frankel while guests were in mostly hues of black. Her sister, themaid of honor, wore a black floor-length gown styled with long leather black gloves and a black veil of her own. Ani’s Tia made a jaw-dropping three-foot structured floret cake which servedas the center piece for the party. More from their wedding here.
More about Destroy All Girls:
Mid-pandemic while working in London we decided to write DESTROY ALL GIRLS, using high stakes and the vivid pre-cell phone world of the nineties to convey the gravity and solitude of Alex’s struggle. The successive lockdowns took a sport that we had known our entire life to another level; We quickly became ingrained in the grungy London scene, frequenting not just the parks but the basement and block parties. Groups of thirty, forty, or even fifty skaters would spend hours together, picking apart and greasing rails, hanging on to passing traffic. As the major stages wore on, our siblinghood deepened, documenting each other, the days passing as if they were the same; Halloween, Christmas, NYE…they were just excuses to break into a park that was closed. Our passionate experiences in London as working ex-patriot artists for over a year brought us the solitude that doesn’t seem possible in today’s day and age; In contrast to our lives in New Jersey, this dark European solitude broke us, and from the re-building DESTROY ALL GIRLS was born.
After a stunning injury to Alex’s older brother GABRIEL at an X-GAMES competition, Alex becomes her brother’s primary caretaker. Alex’s abusive home and coming-of-age trouble are slowly revealed through her addictions, how she copes with her gender dysphoria, and ultimately, her decision to run away from home. Her life reflects the stark realities that we young 1st generation Americans face today; the actions that Alex takes in rebellion to her shocking world reflect her trauma and desperate need to live beyond it. The film’s writing style oscillates between the sticky pulsing suburban summer of Alex’s hometown, and her violent new life after meeting Cameron and joining him on the road. As much as our story explores abuse and the culture of extreme professional sports in America, it is most importantly about identity and the bond of family.
